Your Summer Before Senior Year College Application Checklist

Introduction: The Summer That Sets Everything Up

The summer between junior and senior year is one of the most valuable—and often underused—windows in the college application process.

Students who use this time well don’t just “get ahead.” They enter senior fall with clarity, momentum, and far less stress.

At Kingfisher Prep, we think of this summer as a chance to build your foundation—not to rush, but to prepare your college application thoughtfully.

Your Summer College Application Checklist

✔ Build and Refine Your College List

  • Finalize a balanced list (“safety”, “target”, “reach”)

  • Research academic programs, campus culture, and location

  • Check application requirements for each school

  • Note deadlines (Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision)

Goal: Enter fall with a working list you feel good about.

✔ Start Your Personal Statement (Common App Essay)

  • Brainstorm ideas (don’t rush to a prompt)

  • Write at least one full draft (this may evolve later, but no writing will be wasted)

  • Revise for clarity, voice, and reflection

  • Get feedback—but keep your voice

Goal: Have a strong draft before school starts.

✔ Create an Activities List

  • List all extracurriculars, jobs, and commitments

  • Include roles, responsibilities, and impact

  • Quantify where possible (hours, outcomes, leadership)

  • Prioritize depth over quantity

Goal: Be ready to transfer this into applications quickly.

✔ Begin Supplemental Essay Research

  • Look up prompts for likely schools.  These may change from year to year, so no need to start writing these essays quite yet.  Instead:

    • Identify repeated themes (“Why this college?”, community, interests)

    • Start outlining ideas

Goal: Reduce workload during busy fall months.

✔ Plan or Complete Standardized Testing (If Needed)

  • Decide if you’ll submit SAT/ACT scores

  • Register for fall test dates if retaking

  • Focus on targeted practice—not cramming

Goal: Have a clear testing plan by August.

✔ Visit Colleges or Attend Virtual Events

  • Tour campuses (if possible)

  • Attend info sessions or department talks

  • Take notes on what stands out

Goal: Gather details for essays and clarify fit.

✔ Secure Letters of Recommendation

  • Confirm teachers who will write for you

  • Ask (if you haven’t already) before school starts

  • Provide a résumé or “brag sheet”

Goal: Set your recommenders up early and thoughtfully.

✔ Organize Your Application Materials

  • Create a document with:

    • Login info

    • Deadlines

    • Essay drafts

    • Activity descriptions

  • Set up a calendar with key dates

Goal: Reduce stress and avoid last-minute scrambling.

✔ Work on a Summer Activity (Job, Internship, Project, or Volunteering)

  • Stay engaged in something meaningful

  • Reflect on what you’re learning

  • Consider how it connects to your story

Goal: Build experience and insight—not just fill time.

✔ Rest (Seriously)

  • Take real breaks

  • Spend time with friends and family

  • Step away from “application mode” when needed

Goal: Enter senior year energized—not burned out.

Remember:

This summer is about progress, not perfection.

Conclusion: Set Yourself Up, Don’t Burn Yourself Out

The goal of this summer isn’t to complete everything—it’s to make senior fall manageable and intentional.

When you:

  • Start your essay

  • Build your college application checklist list

  • Organize your materials

…you create space for better thinking, stronger writing, and less stress.
