Introduction
So, how do you apply to college? The main website you’re going to use is called commonapp.org.
The Common App is a universal college application that allows students to apply to multiple schools at once. Instead of filling out the same basic information repeatedly — like your name, address, and contact details — you complete one central application that can be sent to many colleges.
What Is the Common App?
The Common Application is used by a large number of colleges and universities, but not every school uses it. We’ll talk more about alternative applications later, but for most students, the Common App is the primary platform they’ll use.
The application itself has many parts, which is why understanding how it works early is so helpful.
Creating a Common App Account
You can create a Common App account at any time. Students can go directly to commonapp.org and sign up.
Parents and teachers can also create practice accounts. At Kingfisher Prep, we often recommend this so parents can explore the platform, see what supplemental essays look like, and understand what students are being asked to complete.
If you’re a student, one very important tip is to use an email address and username that you will remember. You’ll be logging into the Common App frequently over many months, so make sure your login information is saved and accessible.
Access for Parents and Counselors
Students can choose to grant access to counselors or recommenders through the platform.
Parents typically don’t log in to a student’s account directly, but they can use a practice account to stay informed about the process.
The key takeaway is that the Common App will be a site students return to many times, so organization from the beginning really matters.
When Should Students Start Filling Out the Common App?
While students can explore the Common App at any time, most of the application refreshes each year around June. This means that some sections reset or update annually.
Because of this, students generally don’t need to start filling out detailed sections until the summer before senior year. That’s when we typically recommend beginning to complete personal information and preparing for essays.
That said, some students like to log in early just to get familiar with the platform — or to enjoy the motivation of seeing completed sections checked off. That’s perfectly fine.
Final Advice
The most important thing to remember is that the Common App is not something to fear. It’s simply a tool — and one you’ll be using often.
Getting comfortable with the platform early makes the entire college application process smoother and less stressful.
At Kingfisher Prep, we help students understand every part of the Common App so they can focus on submitting strong, confident applications.
