You’ve Got Your List — Now What?

Okay. So you’ve got your list. You’re ready to go. Congratulations.

Now we need to talk about organization.

Organization is one of the most important parts of this entire process. Use as many spreadsheets and Google Docs as you need. Make everything easy to find and easy to share — especially if you’re working with a counselor, parent, or advisor.

If someone needs to help you, they should be able to locate everything quickly.

Rank Your Schools Strategically

Once you're organized, the next step is ranking your schools.

The school you want to attend most — the one where you would immediately say, “If I get in, I’m going” — should be your Early Action or Early Decision choice.

That application will be due first, typically at the end of October. Because of that earlier deadline, it deserves your strongest effort and attention.

Make sure that school is clearly at the top of your list.

After your top early school, focus next on the schools you’re most excited about.

Students who begin with their passion schools often produce their strongest supplemental essays early in the process. They feel motivated, energized, and proud of the work.
